Halogen bulbs operate more efficiently than standard bulbs. Since halogen bulbs are available in most of the popular bulb types, they make an excellent choice for replacement. Halogen bulbs are more expensive than standard incandescents. However, the savings in energy far outweigh the additional cost.

Halogens are a class of incandescent bulb that are specially designed to burn hotter and brighter. Recall that the light output from an incandescent bulb depends on the temperature of the filament. The hotter the filament becomes...the more energy is released in the form of visible light.

Tungsten halogen (or just "halogen") bulbs are designed to be a bulb inside a bulb. The primary bulb or capsule as it is sometimes called enclosed the filament and its fill gas. This capsule is coated with a special film on the inside part of the glass which reflects infrared radiation and allows visible light to pass. For standard incandescent bulbs, almost 90% of the energy consumed by the bulb is released in the form of heat. Some of this heat is actually infrared radiation.

A special class of tungsten halogen bulb has recently emerged and become very popular especially in retail applications. This is the low voltage halogen. It is characterized as having very high candlepower for a sharply defined and well-controlled beam spread. The low voltage halogen bulbs are available primary in the miniature reflector or "MR" designs. Since they operate at low voltage they do require a special transformer.
