Energy Saving bulbs

Energy savers have a number of key benefits over normal incandescent bulbs. They are much more efficient at converting power into light, and not into heat. The energy saving bulb therefore runs cooler, which in many applications also makes them safer.

Running cooler, these energy efficient bulbs also last longer.

Compare the efficiency (bulb output in terms of lumens per watt) and lamp life of different types of bulb on this chart, which starts with conventional incandescent bulbs at the top.

Lamp Life and Efficiency

Lamp Efficiency
(lumens per watt)
Lamp Life
(in hours)
Reflector incandescent 7 - 19 2,000 - 5,000
Standard incandescent 8 - 24 750 - 2,500
Tungsten-Halogen 12 - 36 1,000 - 3,000
Mercury vapor 20 - 63 12,000 - 24,000
Fluorescent (tubular) 41 - 91 7,500 - 24,000
Compact fluorescent 50 - 83 7,500 - 10,000
Metal halide 56 - 12510,000 - 20,000
High pressure sodium 61 - 14012,000 - 24,000
Low pressure sodium 100 - 18310,000 - 18,000
