The two primary incandescent reflector lamps models are the "PAR" or sometimes called parabolic reflector lamps for outdoor usage, and the "R" used primarily in indoor applications.
PAR Lamp | R Lamp |
The Majority of the incandescent reflector PAR and R lamps provide a dust free reflecting surface inside the lamp to direct the light without the use of any particular fixture. Both PAR and R light bulbs are available in Flood and Narrow beam model or Spot lamps.
Flood lamps have the greatest distribution of light of all the reflector lamps. They typically have a beam spread of 27 to 40 degrees. The narrow flood lamp has a smaller beam spread, from 16 to 27 degrees.
Flood lamps are used most often in outdoor applications for security or decorative lighting. They are used indoors for larger areas requiring more emphasis than general lighting would provide.
Spot lamps have a narrower beam spread than flood lamps, typically from 12 to 16 degrees. The narrow spot has a beam spread even smaller, from 10 down to 8 degrees. Spot lamps are commonly used for indoor applications where light needs to be concentrated to a small space. This is especially useful in retail applications for highlighting merchandise. These lamps also work very well in recessed lighting applications.
The wattages for both reflector light bulbs, the PAR and R models range from 30 Watts up to 1000 Watts. Industrial applications with high ceilings use the higher wattage bulbs where the atmosphere contains non-combustible dirt, smoke or fumes. PAR bulbs are also available with Krypton gas fill, which results in high light output and long life.
Efficiency
Reflector lamps offer increased efficiency in some applications over general service lamps because light is concentrated over a small area. This allows the lighting designer to achieve sufficient light levels over one region without having to light an entire space to the required light level.
